This Crinkle Paper Soup sensory activity is the perfect sensory invitation to play and create. It’s quick and easy to set-up with no huge list of materials. You can use anything you have around the house and it will certainly work!
This activity is great for when the kids get a bit rowdy and need to calm down and step back. It’s colorful and exciting yet calming and relaxing. Kids are seated, focused on using their sensories and fine motor skills, such as stirring, mixing and playing with the water as well as the crinkle paper. This also gives the little ones a bit of independent time too.
My kids stayed playing with this while I folded laundry. It took me about 3 minutes to set up and I got about 30 minutes out of this activity. Mom win? I think so!

Set up is super easy. I like to place a large bath towel underneath the set-up, which will make cleaning up a breeze. Place a bit of water into one bin and top with the crinkle paper. In the other bin place all of your play pots and utensils.
What is my child learning and improving?
- Creativity (this open-play activity is great for creativity (woah, did you catch the rhyming?) Kids are pretending to be chefs, cooking up meals, setting their soups up on a table perhaps, inviting their lovely bear friends, etc.)
- Fine motor skills (kids are using their hands, fingers and wrist to grab the crinkle paper, use the tongs, stir their soups)
- Sensory play (touching the water, crinkle paper, textures)
- Independency (this activity give kids (and you) some time to calm down, rewind, step back and be quiet for a bit)
