What’s better than creating a unique and exciting painting experience for your kids? How about this Painting with Nature activity? Drop those paintbrushes and paint away using nature!
My kids and I went on a walk the other day and I was looking at all the beautiful nature that is surrounding us. We talked about the different tree types, that maple trees bring maple syrup, that wildflowers aren’t planted and can take care of themselves, that birch trees have white bark. It’s always my favorite time because we get to turn a simple little walk into a whole new outdoor learning environment.
As we were walking I gathered a small bunch of the nature finds we talked about. And when we got home we made a quick little actvity with our treasures. This Painting with Nature allows the children get creative and use their imagination. Along with that it’s a great activity with no set-up that lets them calm down and unwind after a more busy/active activity!

Lay out all of your nature “paintbrushes” onto the tray to visually display them all to the child. Add a little bit of each paint color to the paper plate and you’re ready to go!
What is my child learning and improving?
- Creativity (learning that you can paint with just about everything, including nature finds such as leaves, flowers, twigs)
- Fine motor skills (holding the leaves, tiny leave stems)
TIP- I always love to talk to my children through out crafts and activities. This is a great time to learn about colors, what types of nature finds they’re using (leaves, twigs), even what type of plant/tree it is (oak leaf, maple leaf). Turn all of your activities into fun learning activities!
